Sus grandes éxitos lo convierten en el tenor más importante del mundo. Sin embargo, en 1890, en el Teatro Real de Madrid, su voz sufre un fallo que fue el preludio de su muerte, unos días después, en plena juventud. A pesar del diagnóstico de los médicos, sus amigos más íntimos sabían que Gayarre murió porque ya no podía cantar.
